Drawing From Life Workshop - Creating realistic, three dimensional form with value (or shading.)
Steps 1, 2, and 3 |
|
 |
Step 1 - I chose which paper to use
I chose a paper by making test swatch on a few different kinds until I found one that I could create a slightly rough looking texture on that mimicked the towel's texture. To do this, I made each test swatch with the side of the 4B pencil's lead and then compared each result to the towel until I found the one that looked most like its texture. |

Step 2 - I made a quick line drawing
With the adjustable light to the right side and slightly above it, I arranged the towel until it had lots of folds and shadows. I didn't intend to draw the entire towel, just the most interesting part, so I measured the width and height of the part I wanted to draw and marked those measurements on the paper. Then, I made a loose line drawing.
With the side of the 4B pencil's lead, in an overhand clutch position and using light pressure, I made several quick strokes. I looked for the most obvious lines of the folds and drew them first. After I was satisfied with the placement of the first few lines, I added others. I included the shapes of some of shadow areas, too.

Step 3 - I added the darkest shadows.
Using the side of my 4B pencil, I hatched in the darkest shadow areas (6's and 7's on the grayscale.). I darkened them into a value that was slightly lighter than they actually were so that I could more easily change them if I decided they needed to be different later on.
I've found that a great deal of drawing is about comparison. I rarely place a line or create a value perfectly on the first try! Most of the time, I'll draw a line or value and change it later after more of the subject has been drawn and I have more to compare it to. I think it's easier to correct things later on if I draw the first lines and values a little lightly.
