Drawing Still In Process – Take A Peek At Earth Seed

I was up to my neck in creation last week. One idea after another kept coming at me and I took notes as quickly as I could, but some of them got away. Oh well. They’ll come back someday I suppose.
I’ve scanned a few parts of Earth Seed. Some parts are much more developed than [...]

Beneath > Earth Seed WIP

The drawing called Beneath has become Earth Seed. I hope this mind map explains why.

Beneath – Exploration Drawing WIP

I’m working on an “exploration” drawing. My explorations begin with a feeling or meaning and I keep drawing until I find it on the paper. In this one, I’m looking for the feeling in this series of words:
under>beneath>shelter >protected >insulated
I’m not sure where the desire to draw “under” or “beneath” came from, but it had [...]

Valentine’s Day Drawing – Heart and Apple Blossoms

We had a Valentine’s Day Exchange at the drawing club today and my drawing was a challenge. I discovered that it’s difficult to balance a design in a heart shape unless it’s symmetrical, and I didn’t have a symmetrical image that looked right in a heart shape! Quite a conundrum. Then the flower and leaf [...]

Roots – WIP a Little Farther Along

Here’s where I am on Roots. As you can see, I’m working in the details using small squares. To do that I cut small squares out of paper (masks) and place them around an area to draw. Masks keep me focused on one area at a time so I can get all the tiny little [...]

Roots, my latest WIP (… and thank you for wondering where I’ve been.)

Thank you all for leaving comments and emailing me after I wrote that last post about being depressed, and then dropped out of sight. I’m sorry I didn’t respond to any of you, and I hope you understand that being responsive was difficult for me at that time.
I went to the Doc finally, after the [...]

Tall Grass Sketch

This tall grass is growing right outside my front door. (Yes, I know. I know. We don’t trim as much as we could.) Anyway, the grass’ stems are dark purple-ish at the bottom and some of the leaves are bright green at the top. The seed head is light green. It’s beautiful.
I composed this as [...]

Dune and Grass at Lake Michigan

I sketched this scene at Lake Michigan today. The foreground is tall grass that grows near the shore and the background is part of an exposed dune with trails. This section of the dune was surrounded by dense trees.
I’ve sketched tree foliage a lot, so I was pretty sure I could draw that and the [...]

Honeysuckle Leaves in a Cha Cha Beat

These Honeysuckle leaves growing around a stick had a rhythm that sung to me and, although the drawing is simple, I think I’ve captured the melody in this drawing. From the bottom up, the count goes: 1, 2 and 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, 8, and 9, 10.
I can hear this rhythm with my [...]

Sketching Nature Simply – Lombardy Poplar

After a huge scare involving the health of our oldest cat, a long sleepless night, and an amazing recovery, I spent some time sketching outside last evening to come back down to earth. We have a few Lombardy Poplars in our front yard. They were planted there by the previous owner and we’ve watched them [...]
