I learn about drawing all over again when I teach it. I’ve been drawing for so long that I don’t think about it anymore, and beginners always ask questions that make me think about why I draw the way I do. There are many drawing techniques, and they are all different ways to get the hand to draw what the eye sees, and they all work! It’s helpful to know a whole range of drawing styles so you can reach into your magic bag and pull out just the technique you want whenever you need it. That’s confusing for people just learning to draw, though.
When I teach, I try to give a good understanding of the basic principals of drawing while adding a few interesting techniques to add spice to the lesson. Each person is different, though, and half the job of teaching drawing is figuring out what each unique person needs to be able to make that connection between the eye and the hand.
