It’s Autumn in Michigan, and all I see around me are huge stands of trees turning bright colors. Oh, sure, there are other things to draw, but the trees really capture my attention.
As the leaves start to fall, the calligraphy of each tree is revealed. Limbs peek out, giving a glimpse of the structure behind the veil.
I drew the trunk with the side of the pencil slightly weighted to one side to create a shadowed effect.
I drew the limbs with the pencil at varied angles and with a slight twisting motion that helped create crooked looking branches.
I drew the leaves by hatching in large masses and then erasing into them to shape the clumps and to make some individual highlighted leaves.
