One Stroke After Another

I’ve been working on a commissioned piece for the last ten days. It’s taking longer than I expected it to, and I started to worry about if I’d have it done on time.

Here’s a handy drawing secret that I’d like to pass on to you: if a drawing is not going well, just keep working on different areas. To do that, break the subject into parts. Use a mask to completely block off the difficult area while you work on another. After you remove the mask, you’ll see the problem area more objectively and you’ll have made progress on the drawing in the meantime.

My drawing is coming along now. I’ll get it done on time. But, boy oh boy, it sure was helpful to pull the masking trick from the magic bag of experience!
