Drawing in Process – Flowerpot

I’m drawing an illustration for an article I’ve written. I thought I’d show you the drawing as it progresses. I’m using a very smooth Bristol Board (Strathmore 400 Series Plate Finish) and it’s a little tricky to work with. Whenever I use this board, I always spend a lot of time doing general fills with tight hatching in several layers. It doesn’t have much of a grain so I have to take my time and add layer after layer of hatching until it reaches the value I’m trying for. You can see some of my hatch marks in the close-up. I like using this paper, even though it’s challenging to work with, because I can create very gentle looking “washes” of graphite on it.

I’m creating the texture on the flowerpot with several layers of hatching gone over with a brush. Then I’m using a kneaded eraser to lift out highlights. I’ll probably leave the spilled dirt rough textured and looking a lot like it does now.

I’ll post the next steps in days to come.
